Camp Create


ArtStart’s Camp Create for Teens is geared for youth who want to explore their imagination through a variety of art media, learn about the arts of a culture, and gain new skills in making art. Designed to inspire creativity, these classes encourage participants to think outside of the box, see people and things with new eyes, and explore a variety of ideas and media through the arts.

The cultural theme of Camp Create 2021 is Passport to Japan! Camp Create is offered virtually on Zoom this year. Teens participate in 3 different classes daily. All art materials provided. For scholarship information, please email

Construction Arts-Dragon Lore
The Japanese dragon is wingless, with a long serpentine body and short legs. Japanese dragons are linked with water, as they were originally considered water gods. Join artist Gustavo Boada to make your own Japanese dragon working with papier mache, paint and decorative materials.

Gyotaku and More
Create a magnificent set of fish art work using a variety of art materials from paint to inks. Join artist Karen Anderson to learn the art of Gyotaku fish printing on a variety of materials including washi paper and more. Then add your favorite “chop”.

Japanese Nihonga Painting
Four beasts guard the 4 directions in Japan—the White Tiger of the west, the Azure Dragon of the east, the Vermillion Bird of the south and the Black Tortoise of the north. Work with artist Jeanette Dickinson to create your own Nihonga painting of your favorite mythological creature(s).

Payment plan available: $100 deposit plus 3 payments of $50.00, paid every two weeks.
