ArtStart’s Camp Create for Teens is geared for youth who want to explore their imagination through a variety of art media, learn about the arts of a culture, and gain new skills in making art. Designed to inspire creativity and gain insights about a specific culture, these classes encourage participants to think outside the box, see people and things with new eyes, and gain new art skills and techniques using different art media. The theme of Camp Create 2022 is Passport to Down Under: Australia to New Zealand. Camp Create includes 4 different arts experiences for the 4-day camp.

The Dreamtime-Drawing and Painting
Explore the Dreamtime and the drawings of the First People that reflect their deep connection to the Earth and all living things. Learn about plants and animals of Australia like the koala bear, the kangaroo, and eucalyptus tree, all sacred to the the First People. Then using simplified figures, geometric decorations and repetition create your own Dreamtime painting inspired by the art of the First People.

Art From Nature-Found Object
Koori women, an Aboriginal group living on the South Coast of New South Wales, are known for their beautiful art created from shells gathered on the beaches. Originally sold to tourists, Koori shell art is now exhibited in museums and art galleries world-wide. Work with artist Jeanette Dickinson to design and create art from natural materials like pebbles, shells and sea glass.

A Home Fit For A Hobbit-Architecture
There is nothing like viewing a classic story like Tolkien’s epic tale The Lord of the Rings at the movies to inspire imagination! Some of the main characters of the story, the Hobbits, known as halflings, live an idyllic and peaceful life. Work with artist Julie Boada to design and create a home for a Hobbit nestled in the green hills of Eriador and the Kingdom of Arnor.

From Gourd Art to Tattooes-Mixed Media
Gourd plants were brought from Polynesia by the ancestors of the Maori when they migrated to New Zealand. Work with artist Jeanette Dickinson to create beautiful gourd art inscised with Maori symbols. Then use your gourd as an ipu container used by the Maori to hold the pigment for tattooing. Finally, design and create a temporary tattoo inspired by Maori symbols to wear as body decoration.

ArtStart Internship Opportunities for Camp Create Participants

One of the ways older ArtStart campers can turn their knowledge and skill learned in Camp CREATE into action, is to assist artists and staff as interns in ArtStart’s Passport to Down Under: Australia to New Zealand camp for younger children ages 4-12 years. Interns work side-by-side with professional teaching artists to assist in the outdoor classroom or virtually online.

The internship program is for youth ages 13 years & older. There are 16 openings for full-day internships this year. Interns receive a stipend for one week of service.

To be considered for an internship both new and returning interns must: 1) fill out an application and send it in by the deadline; and, 2) register for the virtual Camp Create offered July 5-8, 2022 from 9:00 am-3:00 pm.

Fill out the internship application.

Internship application deadline: May 13, 2022
