Camp Create for ages 13+ features the fascinating culture of ancient Egypt and Ottoman Turkey through the arts. Working side-by-side with professional artists, participants see the world with new eyes and appreciate how connected all people are no matter what period of time they live in or where they live. Youth create art works inspired by ancient Egypt and Turkish traditions. They use a variety of art materials and develop new art skills and techniques. Youth participate in 3 different classes daily over 4 days. 

Camp Create participants may apply for an internship to work with artists who are teaching in the younger children's 2-week camp, Passport to Egypt and Turkey. Interns receive a small stipend. Learn more.

Passport to Egypt features a variety of art projects and hands-on activities inspired by the ancient culture of Egypt. Nature study, including animals and plants unique to the country, art, music, stories, creative dramatics, and movement are all featured in this exciting introduction to an ancient and a living culture. 

Clay & Shadow Puppets (Ages 6–8)

From Pots to Statues: Clay (8:30am)
The Egyptians were one of the first cultures in the world to create pottery! Early pottery was created for use in the home; later pottery for decoration. Work with master potter, Lisa Himmelstrup to learn the history of ancient Egyptian pottery and clay techniques, as you create a variety of pottery pieces inspired by ancient Egypt. 

Out from the Shadows: Shadow Puppets (10:15am)
The first puppets found in tombs were more like children’s toys than puppets. In the 10th century shadow puppets made of leather were brought from Asia to Egypt. Join artists Julie and Gustavo Boada to retell the story of the Benu Bird, the bringer of light to the ancient Egyptian world through this shadow puppet tradition.

Uniquely Egyptian: Drawing and Painting (8:30am)
Egyptian painting is very unique. The head of a person or animal in a painting is seen from the side while the body is seen from the front! Work with artist Karen Anderson to create colorful paintings with highlights of gold inspired by ancient Egyptian paintings.

Ancient Egyptian priests and physicians prescribed herbal medications made from thyme, fennel, garlic, juniper and other plants. Work with artist Laurie Witzkowski to make salves and syrups from plants, recording the recipe for each with pen and ink on Egyptian papyrus. 

Mummies and More: Mixed Media (10:15am)
The practice of preserving a body as a mummy is widespread across the globe. In ancient Egypt everyone except for criminals, was entitled to be embalmed and receive a decent burial.
